Public schools in Bermuda to resume in-class learning

Bermuda Education Minister Diallo Rabain announced that in-class learning for all public schools will resume on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.

In a release, the ministry reported the decision was made by the Education Emergency Measures Committee (EEMC) at a meeting held Saturday.

A spokesperson for the EEMC said, “Bermuda Public school buildings are operational and prepared for the return of staff and students. Remote learning will stop and schools will function under normal schools hours and operate in strict adherence to the public health guidelines.”

The decision to resume in-class learning is a change from a previous announcement late last month that Bermuda’s public schools would reopen in January with remote learning arrangements. 

Rabain said he believes that by working together and following protocols, the consequences of the pandemic can be surpassed.

“I am asking our educators, parents and students to continue to review and remain updated with the health guidelines for schools. This includes mask-wearing, hand hygiene and physical distancing. We understand this is a stressful time, but we must continue to follow the advice given by the Department of Health.” 

The representatives of the EEMC include the Ministry of Education, the Department of Education, the Bermuda Union of Teachers, the Bermuda Public Services Union, the Bermuda Industrial Union, the Department of Health, the Department of Communications, and Members of the Legislature.
