Dominica launches new initiative to enhance conservation efforts for the Sisserou

A new program has started to better protect Dominica’s national bird, the Imperial Amazon (Amazona imperialis). This is part of a larger effort to protect wildlife on the island.

The local environmental group EcoBalance Inc. and the regional NGO Caribaea Initiative are working together on a new project called “Sisserou Conservation with Civil Society (SCCS).” According to a press release, the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) backs the project and works with Dominica’s Forestry, Wildlife, and Parks Division.

The Imperial Amazon, also known as the Sisserou, is native to Dominica and is Critically Endangered. Even after years of conservation work, the species remains at risk from climate change, habitat loss, and potential conflicts with farming practices.

The announcement stated that the main purpose of the SCCS project is to improve conservation efforts through a range of methods that work together. These include engaging more scientists in studying the species, involving civil society in monitoring and protecting it, and launching awareness efforts to encourage more people to learn about and protect this iconic bird of Dominica.

A big part of the initiative will be building relationships with farmers, schools, community groups, and other local stakeholders to encourage conservation through working together.

The project also apparently attempts to develop a comprehensive, long-term conservation plan for the Imperial Amazon, ensuring that efforts remain effective in the future.

As part of this campaign, there will be training sessions, community outreach activities, and partnerships with a variety of organisations, including schools, farming communities, and civic groups.

“The project aims to help protect one of the Caribbean’s most famous bird species for a long time by making it easier for local communities, civil society groups, and conservation experts to work together,” the Caribaea Initiative said in a press release.
