Barbados to explore other areas of cooperation with Mexico
Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw is expressing renewed confidence in new areas of collaboration that can be pursued to the advantage of both nations as Barbados prepares to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations with Mexico.
Victor Hugo Morales Meléndez, the Mexican ambassador to Barbados, recently paid a courtesy visit to the acting prime minister at Ilaro Court, where the two counterparts had extensive discussions on various topics.
Given the important work done by his predecessor, particularly during this year, which marks the friendship’s 50th anniversary, Bradshaw assured the ambassador that the government was delighted to collaborate with him.
“I want to wish you well for the coming years and to give Barbados the assurance that we look forward to being able to continue strengthening our bilateral partnership with Mexico,” she continued.
Ambassador Meléndez called Barbados a “wonderful and very important country.” However, he added that despite their long-standing friendship, they could still work together on global issues like climate change or sustainable development and in the academic world.
“It’s crucial to connect with Barbados to address key problems like climate change or sustainable development,” said Ambassador Meléndez. We have significant bilateral business with Barbados, and to mark the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrad gave me a letter that has his signature and is addressed to Prime Minister Mottley.
To support the comprehensive and long-term growth of a regional space program that will benefit the people of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Ambassador further urged Barbados to ratify the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agreement.
Acting Prime Minister Bradshaw praised Ambassador Melendez’s efforts on behalf of his nation.
Diplomatic links between Barbados and Mexico were established in 1972.
