Dominica’s United Workers Party (UWP) elects new leader
Dominica’s United Workers Party (UWP) elected its new political leader — Economist, Dr Thomson Fontaine
Fontaine beat Clement Marcellin – the only other opponent in the political leadership race- 123 votes to 79 during the delegates’ conference held at Goodwill Parish Hall on Sunday, December 27, 2022.
Clement Marcellin has been elected deputy political leader while former political leader Lennox Linton is the new president.
Elections were also held for the following positions:
- Vice President – Francesca Joseph
- Secretary – Nicholas George
- Assistant Secretary- Diane Victor
- Treasurer- Ezekeil Bazil
- Assistant Treasurer – Kent Joseph
- Public Relations Officer – Tehillah Bannis
- International Secretary – McDonald Thomas
- Trustees – E. James, N. Prevost and E. JnoFinn
The UWP has decided to not participate in the upcoming general election on December 6, 2022.
In an official statement previously released, UWP’s General Secretary Nicholas George said that the call for the snap elections must be condemned by all Dominicans “as an affront to our democracy and an insult to our people.”
UWP calls for Dominicans not to vote unless two basic election standards are met — a clean voters list and for all legitimate voters to have a National ID card.
