It’s official: CR5 bags Dominica International Airport project

China Railway No.5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (or “CR5”) has bagged the EC $1 billion-plus contract for the Dominica International Airport project.

Following the agreement signed by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, MMC Development Ltd. tapped more than five contractors worldwide to bid for the project.

And after a tedious selection process that included consultations with the Government of Dominica, the IADC, and other stakeholders, CR5 was chosen to undertake the design, construction, supply, completion, testing, and commissioning of the international airport meant to serve as a premier global gateway to Dominica.

MMC Development Ltd. CEO and President Anthony Haiden said that CR5 presented the best tender for the project.

“They are the best choice. We are confident that CR5 can complete the airport project construction with quality and quantity within the contract period.”

Haiden added that as the developer, MMC Development Ltd. would ensure that the airport will be resilient and sustainable to provide the best benefit for all.

In a statement, CR5 said they are delighted to be chosen as the main contractor for the project.

“The Dominica International Airport project is the first overseas EPC design and construction general contracting spot project of China Railway No. 5 Bureau. The project is significant in building a large-scale overseas high-quality development pattern.”

China Railway No.5 has started to mobilize its resources to Dominica for the construction to go full-scale by the end of this year.

Approximately 500 acres of land will be developed for the Dominica International Airport to be located on the island’s northeast coast between Woodford Hill and Wesley communities.

The Dominica International Airport will have a 2850-meter runway, a sophisticated terminal building, and ancillary buildings, including but not limited to an ATCT tower, a general aviation hangar, a fuel farm, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) facility, a central sub-station, a cargo bay and waste disposal/treatment plant.

A team of experts have been working over the past months to complete a thorough geotechnical and environmental assessment to formulate detailed action plans according to international standards.

Upon completion in 2026, the Dominica International Airport can accommodate up to 750,000 passengers annually. In addition, it can handle wide-bodied aircraft like Airbus A350 or Boeing 777-200ER on direct routes to and from North America, Europe, and key cities in Asia.

The project is funded mainly by Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment Program (CBI).
