Bermuda Elections 2020: PLP wins 30 seats
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party (PLP) has recorded a landslide victory over One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) in the 2020 general elections, winning 30 seats in the House of Assembly.
PLP got 5 more seats from the OBA, leaving the Opposition with only 6 seats in the House of Assembly.
PLP won the elections with 15,998 votes or 62.10 percent while OBA got with 8,314 votes or 32.27 per cent of the electorate.
The Free Democratic Movement (FDM) secured 1,384 votes and independent candidates received 67 votes.
In an address, Premier David Burt called Bermudans to unite as they face the hurdles brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have an incredibly difficult road ahead for this country and it is going to require us all to work together. I now say that it is time for us to put aside our historical divisions and come together as one people.”
He pledged that his government will not take its majority in the House of Assembly for granted.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled next Thursday, 8 October.
Outgoing Governor John Rankin congratulated Burt on his re-election.
“The Governor also welcomed the continuing strength of Bermuda’s democratic institutions which help to ensure the free and fair elections in which Bermudians have once again participated.”
Meanwhile, opposition party, One Bermuda Alliance has not released any statement yet about the election results.
