Caribbean artists jam together vs COVID-19 with “WE GOT THIS”

Song hopes to bring unity in the coronavirus-stricken region

Various music talents and artists from 14 islands in the Caribbean region collaborated in a heartwarming song, spreading a message of hope, unity, and resilience in the time of the pandemic.

Titled “We Got This,” the four-minute song is the brainchild of two Barbadians, Ian “iWeb” Webster and Cheyne Jones. It premiered on May 2, and has already garnered 24,367 views on YouTube as of this writing.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said former three-time Calypso Monarch iWeb. “In St Kitts alone someone messaged and showed me that on their Facebook page they had gotten 15,000 hits already.”

The video was first aired on Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Five minutes after the pilot, the songwriters immediately received commendation from Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

The upbeat, tropical beat of “We Got This” is reminiscent of what the Caribbean is known for throughout the world: the while the region is often roughed up by strong hurricanes and tropical storms, its inhabitants always bounce back strong.

A total of 25 vocalists from islands such as Guyana, Antigua, St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat, and The Bahamas collaborated with the effort.

The duo also enlisted the help of the Riddim Tribe dance group for the music video.

According to iWeb and Jones, they have yet to meet in person most of the artists who participated in the project. Meanwhile, Selwyn Browne of Vibe Barbados did the stitching together of the solo videos of the artists for the visuals.

“Doing the track wasn’t a question, it was important to do We Got This, and the nature of how it came together demonstrates that we are a community,” shared Shontelle Layne in an interview, who also participated in the track.

Better known by her mononym Shontelle, Layne is a native of Barbados but is now based in New York. She is known for her hit singles Impossible and T-Shirt.
