Dominica’s Karifuna Cultural Group celebrates 43rd anniversary

Dominica’s Karifuna Cultural Group celebrates a milestone of 43 years this year under the theme: ‘Wi Nou La.’

A virtual ceremony was hosted in their honour to showcase a wide range of performances to include the bird and war dances.

The group continues to flourish as they aim to revive and maintain the Kalinago Culture.

This Karifuna group had the opportunity to represent Dominica in several festivals, trade shows and educational forums at regional and international levels. One of their latest representations was at Expo2020 in Dubai.

For over four decades, The Karifuna Cultural Group has been actively promoting and reviving Kalinago culture and traditions in Dominica and internationally.

Prosper Paris- the group’s longest-serving president, stated that the celebration 43rd anniversary was done virtually due to a rise of coronavirus cases in Dominica.

The virtual celebrations showcased the variety of dance performances done by the Karifuna Cultural Group in their lifetime.

The group was formed in 1978 to revive the Kalinago Culture and showcase it to the world. The group has been educating people through dance, music, and other art forms.

Karifuna Cultural Group is also featured in many documentaries, movie including Seven Nights, The Spirit of Jaguar, Orchid House, Chocolate Pollen and Columbus
