Local climate agency lauded for resilience framework
The efforts of Dominica’s Climate Resilience Execution Agency (CREAD) to build resilience has gained international recognition, and this was lauded by the nation’s prime minister at a recent press conference.
In a report by Dominica News Online, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said CREAD did a “remarkable job” in building a framework for Dominica’s goal of becoming the world’s first resilient nation.
“I believe all things considered, CREAD has done a remarkable job in setting the framework and specific actions for building resilience within our country. It has brought tremendous international recognition and attention to Dominica’s efforts and mobilization of resources and interest in our resilience agenda which has been able to develop the national strategy, the national plan…,” Skerrit said.
Skerrit believes that Dominica may be one of the few countries worldwide to have a national strategy for building resilience.
“And when we speak about resilience we are not only talking about the physical space, we are talking about the fiscal policies, our economy, our health systems, our education systems, our forests, our marine space,” he explained. “All of the elements have been looked at as part of our national strategy.”
Skerrit said he is giving CREAD “high marks” for its work.
According to CREAD’s website, the agency is in charge of “defining metrics, targets and milestones for a resilient Dominica; developing Dominica’s Climate Resilience and Recovery Plan (CRRP); and identifying data-driven, compelling and actionable initiatives.”
Aside from CREAD’s steps to put Dominica as the leading climate-resilient country in the world, its government has been ramping up its efforts to reinforce its major infrastructures with climate-resilient foundations and materials.
Thousands of houses are being built all over the island to withstand hurricanes and other calamities. The Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program has been funding these projects, which are primarily handled by developing company MMC Development Ltd.
MMC Development Ltd. has been a long-standing partner of Dominica, working together through Typhoon Erika and Hurricane Maria to provide safer homes to Dominicans.
