St Lucia mulls over school reopening
With the coronavirus cases cleared in the entire island, St Lucia’s Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations is considering the return of Grade Six and Form Five pupils to schools.
This is to prepare them for the upcoming Common Entrance Examination and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
The department has already sought the approval of St Lucia’s Ministry of Health, and is doing its best to roll out the necessary measures to keep the children from incurring the infection.
St Lucia has also been in contact with several stakeholders, “mindful of the respective concerns of students, teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff.”
The final decision is yet to be announced via its official communication channels.
Dominican Republic reprimanded over repressive measures vs COVID-19
The Amnesty International (AI) expressed its concerns over a few countries that employ “inhumane” measures to protect the citizens from the highly contagious coronavirus.
Dominican Republic was one of the countries mentioned in AI’s latest report.
This comes as President Danilo Medina’s request for a third extension of the state of emergency was granted by the Senate. The state of emergency will be extended for 25 days, from May 18 to June 11.
“Even during times of emergency, states have an obligation to prohibit arbitrary detentions, ” the AI said. “Penalties for non-compliance with restrictions imposed in response to COVID-19 must be the last resort and need to be proportionate to protect public health.”
AI added that punitive measures also tend to be “counterproductive,” and have a “disproportionate impact on marginalized groups.”
COVID-19 cases in Haiti doubled
Dominican Republic’s neighbor Haiti is struggling to keep its citizen safe from COVID-19—cases at home has doubled.
There were 219 cases as of May 13, a big jump from the 108 cases recorded a week earlier, according to a report.
Most of the confirmed infections are “in and around the capital Port-au-Prince.”
“Most Haitians do not have access to potable water and sanitation, and many live in crowded households where quarantine and isolation are challenging,” Carissa Etienne, head of Pan American Health Organization, noted.
Etienne added that the “growing food insecurity, civil unrest, and a precarious security” may exacerbate Haiti’s current conundrum.
