World leaders congratulate Dominica for its 45th year of Independence

Leaders from around the world extended their congratulations to Dominica as the nation marked its 45th Independence Day on November 3.

In a report by WIC News, leaders from the Middle East and South Asia conveyed their greetings to Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and President Slyvie Burton.

External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, congratulated Dominica in a Facebook post, underlining the shared values and friendship between Dominica and India.

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of Qatar, extended warm congratulations to President Sylvie Burton, highlighting the global significance of this joyous milestone.

In a show of international solidarity and goodwill, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, joined Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, in conveying their congratulations to both Dominica’s top officials.

‘Let’s Celebrate’

In his Independence Day speech, Skerrit highlighted the numerous achievements Dominicans have to commemorate, which is why the theme for the 45th Independence Day is “Annou Sélébwé,” meaning “Let’s celebrate.”

Skerrit recognized the challenges that Dominica has faced in its recent development and commended the dedicated citizens who have worked diligently to pave the way for a more peaceful future.

He also shared that the government has implemented salary raises for nearly 3,000 public officers, resulting in an average salary increase of 6%. Some officers have even experienced a substantial 13% raise in their salaries.

Additionally, the Prime Minister unveiled plans to construct 327 homes in the near future to relocate and resettle residents from vulnerable areas, specifically targeting Budo, Sansobe, Pilitsufre, and Campbell. This initiative aims to enhance the security and well-being of these communities.

Building back a better Dominica

In a resolute response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Maria and Typhoon Erika, the Skerrit administration in Dominica has undertaken a transformative initiative to build back a more resilient nation. Thousands of climate-resilient houses have been provided to Dominicans, marking a significant milestone in the island’s journey towards a more secure and sustainable future.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, this initiative goes beyond mere reconstruction. It represents a steadfast commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the nation and its people in the face of climate change and extreme weather events.

With the unwavering work of Dubai-based MMC Development Ltd., the climate-resilient houses are constructed to withstand the ferocity of hurricanes and typhoons, a crucial aspect of disaster preparedness. These modern homes not only offer improved living conditions but also serve as beacons of hope and resilience in the aftermath of two major natural disasters.
